Discover the Depths of History: Kaymaklı Underground City with TigonTours

Journey beneath the surface of Cappadocia to explore the mysterious and awe-inspiring Kaymaklı Underground City—the largest of the 34 discovered subterranean cities in the region, and one of the most captivating historical marvels in Turkey.

Each year, over one million visitors are drawn to its intricate network of tunnels and chambers, originally carved by early Christian communities seeking protection from persecution during the Roman Empire, when Paganism was the dominant religion. Hidden deep below the earth, this underground world became a sanctuary of survival, faith, and resilience.

🕳️ A Hidden City Carved in Stone

Spanning four excavated levels, Kaymaklı impresses not only with its size but also with its thoughtful design. Visitors will discover living quarters, kitchens, stables, storage rooms, wine cellars, churches, and even graveyards—all carefully engineered for underground life.

Its advanced ventilation system, with 18 vertical shafts, ensured fresh air reached even the deepest chambers, keeping this 60-meter-deep city habitable for extended periods.

🌍 UNESCO World Heritage Site

Recognized for its historical and cultural significance, Kaymaklı was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 and opened to the public in 1964. Today, it stands as a testament to human ingenuity and spiritual endurance.
